Our Juxtaposed Old Vine Grenache has been a year-on-year hit, receiving awesome reviews from The Wine Front, Oz Wine Review and Halliday for every new vintage that we’ve released. And our 2018 Grenache has officially taken the cake, with our highest score yet from The Wine Front.
Scoring a huge 96 points, Gary Walsh had nothing but positive things to say for this 2-year-old drop:
“Violet, raspberry and spice, heady aromatics married to richness of fruit. A regal carriage of lush red fruits, a thick ribbon of silky tannin, cool integrated ‘mineral’ acidity, subtle earthiness like sweet soil freshly turned, outstanding length and fine silty tannin trailing. A thing of beauty. This wine has been hit out of the park in 2018.” Read more.
This is the highest score a wine under $30 has received in years, and along with a few other wines, is the highest score for ANY McLaren Vale wine in over a year.
Our 2018 Old Vine Grenache is a blend of two vineyards, originating from the Smart vineyard in Clarendon, and the Wait vineyard in Blewitt Springs.
The fruit from our Smart vineyard draws it’s flavoursome and textured characteristics from the ancient and well tendered soils, dating back to 1921, the year this vineyard was planted. And a lot of the credit for this amazing fruit must be given to Bernard and Wayne Smart, who are the custodians of this picturesque vineyard. Some would even go as far as naming this estate as a legacy vineyard, as numerous Grenache vineyards in Clarendon and Blewitt Springs have been planted from Smart vineyard clippings. We’ve been lucky enough to use fruit from this vineyard since 2015.
The other fruit for this Grenache is sourced from the Wait vineyard, planted in 1942. Growing in slightly sandier soils near the top of Blewitt Springs, this fruit is the backbone of the wine, bringing the structure, tannins and rich colour to the table.
We feel honoured to be able to make wines from such iconic and historic vineyards. Naturally, we aim to simply showcase only what the vineyard gives, meaning no manipulations or new oak, filtering or finings.
The fruit from these two vineyards work really well together to make up our Old Vine Grenache. We feel that this wine pays tribute to the two vineyards that it’s comprised of, while also delivering a profound and complete expression of McLaren Vale Grenache.
